Dan Giammar

Abstract: Lead and lead-containing compounds haveproperties that were beneficial for their use as gasoline additives, pigmentsin paints, and materials for water storage and supply. The widespread use of lead-containing materialsresulted in environmental exposures to this toxic metal through air, dust, soil, and water. Work of scientists like Claire Patterson, a geochemist, ultimately led to the removal of tetraethyllead from gasoline. Knowledge ofenvironmental geochemistry can also play an important role in monitoring andcontrolling exposure to lead in drinking water. We will step through three crises of lead in drinking water, examining the underlying causes of increased lead release and exploring the roles ofresearchers in addressing these crises. These crises in Washington, DC, Flint, Michigan, and Newark, New Jersey illustrate the vulnerability of legacy infrastructure to changes in waterchemistry. They are also are casestudies in the application of fundamental principles of aquatic chemistry to engineered aquatic systems. Short Biography: Professor Giammar is the Walter E. BrowneProfessor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Energy,Environmental and Chemical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Professor Giammar's research focuses on chemical reactionsthat affect the fate and transport of heavy metals, radionuclides, and otherinorganic constituents in natural and engineered aquatic systems. His recent work has investigated the removalof arsenic and chromium from drinking water, control of the corrosion of leadpipes, geologic carbon sequestration, and biogeochemical processes forremediation of uranium-contaminated sites. His research has been sponsored by the National Science Foundation,Department of Energy, and Water Research Foundation. Professor Giammar is currently an AssociateEditor of EnvironmentalScience & Technology. ProfessorGiammar completed his B.S. at Carnegie Mellon University, M.S. and Ph.D. atCaltech, and postdoctoral training at Princeton University before joiningWashington University in St. Louis in 2002. He is a registered professional engineer in the State of Missouri.Daniel E.
