Human beings are to face unprecedented challenges from the environment in the 21st century. Environmental science has attracted world attention. The Chinese Government has identified environmental protection as its basic policy. To meet the demand of the rapidly growing environmental research and practice in China, to make full use of Fudan university's comprehensiveness, and to train first-class environmental protection professionals, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering was founded in 1996.

The Department has a strong research and teaching team， which is composed of five professors, eleven associate professors, and six well-known scholars from home and abroad as Advisory Professors or Concurrent Professors.
