Introduction
|
Human beings are in face of unprecedented environmental challenges
in the 21st century. As a result, environmental science has attracted world
attention. The Chinese Government has identified environmental protection as its
basic policy. To meet the demand of the rapidly growing environmental research
and practice in China, to make full use of Fudan University’s comprehensiveness,
and to train first-class environmental protection professionals, the Department
of Environmental Science and Engineering was founded in 1996. At present, the
department offers mater’s and doctor’s degrees.
The Department has a strong but younger research and teaching team, with
altogether 49 registered staff, which is composed of 11 professors (including
9 mentors for Ph.D. candidates), 14 associate professors, 12 lecturers
and 6 well-known experts and scholars from home and abroad as Advisory
Professors or Concurrent Professors.
There are six specialties under the department. They are environmental
chemistry, atmospheric environment, environment monitoring, environmental
ecology, environment programming and administration. The department aims at
training well-grounded professionals of wide scope of knowledge, great
motivation at work, high adaptability in scientific research, management and
teaching. It stresses basic education, the ability to practice as well as the
cultivation of outstanding scientific thinking. It places emphasis on expanding
students’ scope of knowledge to endow them with a general idea of the
environment-related interdisciplinary subject, high-tech development and
prospects of application, so as to pave the way for their future research and
development. Graduates of the department fit for occupations such as:
environmental protection and monitoring, the control and harnessing of waste
gas, waste water and industrial residue, the environmental quality assessment,
sanitation and epidemic prevention, commodity proof-test and so on. They are
highly adaptable and have a variety of choices in job-hunting. Currently the
Department enrolls more than 60 undergraduates and 30 graduates every year
(including doctoral graduates).
Combining with the original foundation and characteristics, our department now
is developing scientific research and exploitation on basis of the developing
and constructive direction of the discipline and under the national guidance to
develop the priority fields of high-tech industrialization. Meanwhile, it also
strengthens its cooperation with foreign and domestic enterprises for
coordinating production, study and research. It has now implemented research in
the following fields: atmospheric environment, pollution controlling, green
technology and clean energy resources, the development and application of
environmental materials, environmental programming and management, the city
landscaping and ecology.
During these years, the Department has received 13 grants from the National
Natural Sciences Foundation., a subproject from the “863 program”, the Ford
Foundation and financial support from the Japan’s World Exposition &
Commemorative Fund. It has accomplished 5 National Natural Science Foundation of
China and applied for 15 patents, of which 12 have been authorized. In 1999 it
received from the Ministry of Education a second prize for science and
technology progress; the second prize and the third prize in Shanghai. Presently, it has embarked
on the scientific cooperation and academic communication with America, Japan,
Germany, Britain, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland and so on,
altogether more than 10 countries. |
