My work can be roughly divided into the following topics, (current and most recent first):

  • Applied Sustainable Development,
    • Values-based Indicators

    • Behaviour change e.g. for recycling, low-carbon lifestyles
  • Waste Stream Flows: quantification & modelling
  • Household Waste: minimisation and increased recycling

  • End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV): materials recovery
  • Pyrolysis of Shredder Residues: related metal contaminations
  • (Nuclear Structure Physics)

Current Interests
The inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary work I carry out has a modern name: Sustainable Development. It is a discipline which many people find difficult to define and specify. It involves a simultaneous, multi-pronged approach of related issues covering environmental, financial and social domains. People often find Sustainable Development difficult to grasp because it is not a separate discipline to others, but overlaps many, in different ways. For workers in this field, an ability to keep an overview across different disciplines is critically important, but so also is the need for depth in some specialism. For example, my specialism has been physical sciences and waste management in particular, but I have demonstrated that I deal with waste issues in fuller environmental, social and financial contexts – this approach then qualifies as Applied Sustainable Development. This does not mean that I work on ‘everything’; it means that I take wider, real-life, issues into account when I work on ‘anything’.

While at Fudan University I wish to focus on Applications of Sustainable Development in science, education, business and civil society. This means I would like to interact with each of these disciplines in Fudan, Shanghai and China, providing collaboration which will enhance international status with increased sustainable content e.g. in journal publications, engagement activities with society, and teaching of graduates and undergraduates in each discipline. I have offered to do this via:
  • shared research projects with staff in these disciplines,
  • help with journal writing,
  • help with curriculum development, and
  • help with engagement with businesses and civil groups,
   creating a loose network of staff interested in applying and leading sustainable development in their own field. My exact approach will need to be developed over time; anyone (staff or students) interested should just contact me to see if have any overlapping interests!   

  Applied Sustainable Development requires an overview across different disciplines as well as depth in a specialism. My specialism has been waste management but recently is Values-based Indicators (see www.ESDinds.eu and www.WeValue.org) which has applications in business, economics, government, civil society and education where it can be used to develop mission statements, prioritise, measure progress and cause deep behaviour change. Papers and working papers on these will be available online shortly.
