Two major research areas are focused in this teaching-research division: urban ecology & regional ecological planning, and application of bio-techniques in gardening plant cultivation and environmental protection. Based on the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, the teaching-research division gathers researchers from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering and other relevant departments at Fudan University, and invites famous experts and scholars from China and other countries as academic advisor or guest professor. The first university-level academic unit characterized by urban ecology and regional ecological planning and design in China was set up in 2001 in this division, which aims for targeting the frontiers of international ecology research, enhancing local and international academic exchange and corporation, and promoting the rapid development of urban ecological planning, design, construction and administration. This division has carried out a series of relevant key researches in recent years as follows:
1. Urban ecological research and regional ecological planning. The division emphasizes particularly on the severe ecological crisis in the rapid urbanized areas of China. From the aspect of coordinating human-Earth relation, the division considered the latest progresses of domestic and foreign urban ecological research and the structure, function and urbanization of Chinese cities comprehensively, proposed the concept of eco-city and the procedure of ecological planning, and developed the adjustment method for urban ecology CO2-O2 balancing and assessment method for urban eco-green space requirement. The division also proposed the fundamental theory system and procedures of urban ecological planning and design firstly, and, developed an ecological planning method combining ecological environmental monitoring and green space planning and design under the support of 3S techniques. Based on the water and land resource and environmental capacity particularly, the division integrates the systematic ecology theory, regulation theory of sustainable development, theory of landscape and ecology planning, theory of city planning and GIS/RS techniques, focus on urban ecological regulation, landscape ecological planning research, urban ecological service, urban ecological safety situation, ecological track and urban ecological planning, and eco-city index system, and provides the scientific references for enriching the theory of urban ecology and urban greening.
The division focuses on investigating the regulation mechanism of ecological effects of urban three-dimension greening in the ecological research of urban green space, and adopts aerial remote sensing interpretation, field sampling, analysis of experiments and tests, GIS technique and other approaches, compares with the ecological impact of three-dimension greening of foreign cities and other relevant information, establishes the multimedia database of urban greening with computer technology, and provides the scientific evidence of bio-diversity and structure of green space, plant structure, planning and management theory for urban green system and environmental protection.
In recent years, the division carried out a series of research programs on urban ecological planning and regional landscape planning in many cities and obtained satisfactory achievements, such as “Regional ecological service function and regulation in urbanization in Shanghai, Jiaxing and Hangzhou” (Key Project of National Natural Science Foundation 39930040), “Comparative research on ecological effect of urban three-dimension greening in China and Britain” (Project of National Natural Science Foundation), “Research on forest development in modern city” (Joint Key Project of the National Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai Municipal Government), “Eco-environmental assessment and sustainable development policy for Chongming Island”, “Study on sustainable development strategy in urbanization: urban ecology report” (Consulting Project of Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering), “Research on green resource evaluation and ecological community construction in Bao Steel” (Prize of Shanghai Third Class of Progress of Science and Technology), “Guideline on river regulation”, “Landscape ecological planning in Foshan City”, and ecological planning in Xiamen, Nanning and Weifang. Besides, the division has paid much attention to the integrated development mode based on ecological tourism and carry out “research on the overall planning of tourism in Jinhua”.
At present, the teaching-research division has also carried out a key project of “Research on the landscape ecology and planning along Yangtze River in Three Gorges Reservoir Area (Chongqing Section) China”, financed by Chongqing Municipal Government. Three Gorges Reservoir Area, located in the key national park of China – Three Gorges, is the largest reservoir in the world, and focused by domestic and foreign researchers. Based on relevant domestic and foreign studies, the research applied new techniques and methods actively, provided a scientific basis for effectively protecting local ecological environment, landscape and tourism resource, and contributed to the constructing of ecological security structure for Chongqing metropolitan area. 2. Application of bio-techniques in gardening plant cultivation and environmental protection .
In recent years, the diversion has been working on non-soil ecological turf technology, development of medicinal, healthy and nutritional ingredient in plants, and cultivation of famous, special and excellent flower and tree varieties, and removal of Microcystis aeruginosa with algicidal bacteria and its effect on the degradation of microsystins. . The non-soil ecological turf technology has been granted a national invention patent in China (Patent Number: ZL01 1 13006.7, International Patent Classification Number: A01G31/00). The division is cooperating with the High-Technology Agriculture Zone of Zhejiang Yuhang and establishes a research base of 40 hm2 there under the support of an infrastructure development funding up to 27 million Yuan from the governments of Hangzhou City and Yuhang District. Meanwhile, considering the ecological degradation and market demand for the threatened medicinal plant – Taxus chinenwsis var.mairei Cheng et L.K, the division developed the rapid propagation technology and has obtained satisfactory progresses. The division applied the tissue culture technology and genetic engineering approach for introducing the resistant plants into urban environmental. The techniques include molecular cloning and transgenic technologies to change the genetic property of turf grass and other plants in urban environment, improve their capacity resisting salt and low temperature stresses, relieve the adverse effects of urban environmental stresses on plant distribution, growth and economic benefits, and improve ecological environment. So far, some anti-freezing genes in Capsella bursa-pastoris have been primarily founded.
In the application of bio-techniques, Microcystis aeruginosa, a common algae during harmful algae blooms was regarded as the research object. Four strains of algae-lysing bacteria were isolated from different water bodies and the decomposing effects and characteristics of algae-lysing bacteria against Microcystis aeruginosa were studied in detail. The algae-lysing mechanisms were discussed intially and the 16S rDNA sequence analytical method was used to identify four strains of algae-lysing bacteria. The research aims to seek effective methods to prevent algae blooms.
3. Academic activities. The division has successfully developed much international cooperation with the UK, USA, Nordic countries, Japan, Italy, Germany, etc in recent years. In addition to some linked-research projects, some key activities for international exchange and conferences have been successfully developed in recent years, which included “China-Nordic Workshop: 2001 International Forum on Water Resource, Water Environment and Water Ecology”, “2004 Forum on Chinese Urban Ecological Construction” and “The 2nd Academic Conference of Center for Urban Ecological Planning and Design of Fudan University”, and the 2006’ International Forum on Eco-Island in Chongming. The topics of “2004 Forum on Chinese Urban Ecological Construction” include the following 7 aspects: ecological planning, construction and management in Chinese cities in transitional period; ecological industry and economy in Chinese cities in transitional period; ecological landscape and tourism in Chinese cities in transitional period; ecological residence and culture in Chinese cities in transitional period; progress of Chinese and international ecological cities and islands planning and construction; planning and construction of ecological Chongming Island; ecological regulation mechanism and nature protection in Chinese cities. The forum invited several academician and famous experts in China for thematic reports, and many relevant officials and experts from Ministry of Construction, State Environmental Protection Administration, Municipality of Shanghai and other cities for direction and communication to expand the academic impact of the unit.
