摘要:Natural halogens (Cl, Br, I), emitted from the ocean, influence the oxidizing capacity of the global marine atmosphere, along with the stratosphere; however, their impact on the air quality of coastal cities is currently unknown. In this talk, an overview of the role of halogens in the atmosphere will be given, including the very recent modelling efforts devoted to assess the role of marine halogens on the urban atmosphere of coastal megacities. This will include results from global and regional models and a case study conducted with a set of high-resolution simulations performed using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) regional model, to assess the impact of ocean emissions and combined chemical processes of halogens (iodine, bromine and chlorine) on air quality levels of Los Angeles and South Coast Air Basin.

 

Professor Alfonso Saiz-Lopez is the founder and first Director of the Department of Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate at CSIC, Spain. He is also an Affiliate Scientist at NCAR, USA. He has devoted most of his career so far to elucidate the role played by natural halogen-containing molecules on global atmospheric oxidizing capacity, air quality and climate through a combination of ground- and satellite-based observations, laboratory work and global chemistry-climate modelling. He has also recently worked on the chemistry of air pollution, with a particular interest in the application of optical/spectroscopic measurement methods. He is also currently developing new research on the use of lake sediments and ice core trace element measurements to further understand the state of oxidation of paleo-atmospheres. He has published over 100 journal papers in the last ten years and received several prestigious awards, including the James R. Holton Junior Scientist Award by the American Geophysical Union (2007), the Outstanding Young Scientist Award by the European Geosciences Union (2008) and the Henry Houghton’s Award by the American Meteorological Society (2009).
